It’s Punk This Week, my weekly punk and rock'n'roll column. Honestly, this time of year is supposed to suck for new music. The year-end lists are all hung by the chimney with care. With splashy exceptions, this time of year is usually what music writers would call “a breather.” Well buckle up, because there’s multiple exceptional new records out this week.

Billiam, a true Father Christmas among us, dropped a 65-song benefit compilation that starts with a new Eddy Current Suppression Ring song. There’s a new COFFER record. Guitar Wolf dropped multiple new singles and announced an album. It’s a Christmas feast for sickos.

To enjoy the full spread of new music—this week and every week—subscribe for $4/month, $40/year, or barter (hit me up). This weekly columnbonus podcasts, and the full see/saw radio archive are only available to paid subscribers. COFFER: COFFER III [self-released]

We’re in the latest magnificent era for Detroit rock’n’roll as so many bands have been crushing it over the past year or so. One of the best the city has to offer is COFFER—a wild, fuzz-slathered dirty dog power trio that blew my mind the one opportunity I got to see them live. I’ve been eager to hear the follow-up to their self-titled tape from the end of last year, and like a bolt of lightning, COFFER III arrived today.

This EP delivered exactly what I was hoping for from that record and their see/saw benefit comp contribution “Nineteen Nervous Breakdown” (which appears on this new one). Antonio from Mod Lang is shredding here under a pseudonym—these three all assume the last name Coffer. “Just Switch” is an unbelievable earworm with tons of punch and an absolutely killer guitar solo. This is a record with six songs that balance charisma with muscle, blues with proto-punk stomp. An essential Detroit rock’n’roll record and a certified Christmas miracle.
