Welcome to Punk This Week, see/saw’s weekly column exploring the latest and greatest punk and rock’n’roll records. Led by new releases from two of the best bands in Detroit right now in TY and Day Residue, this week’s biggie size column is a deep grease-stained bag of treats including some unearthed Subculture, a great new one from the deeply prolific Monda, an excellent new Philly hardcore record, the new Charm School and FKA Smiley albums, and so much more.

With so much incredible underground rock’n’roll to read about, it’s another perfect week to subscribe to see/saw! Punk This Week is available to paid subscribers (and those who barter their way across the paywall). Free subscribers still have access to weekly offerings including interviews, podcasts, playlists, and radio shows. Please consider a subscription, free or paid, to help grow this reader-supported endeavor.

TY: WE R TY [Painters Tapes]

On Halloween, TY’s stomping and elemental punk single “Devil Tattoo” scorched the earth upon impact. Their debut tape WE R TY capitalizes on that track’s promise. This Detroit band featuring members of Fen Fen and H8 Mile make meatheaded egg punk; just listen to that combination of gruff dude vocals and nimble guitars on “Choked Up.” Their dirtbag patriotism on the jagged and grimy rock’n’roll track “USA” lands like puke splattering across a sidewalk outside a bar; a familiar brand of flag waving raw sewage roq from the D. “Oh No” is classic ’70s power pop at 1.5x speed and 1.5x burliness. Right when you think you’ve heard them at their fastest, they scream and sprint through the minute-long banger “Nematode.” There’s never a dull moment, with multiple songs jockeying for position as “the one.” They strike this excellent balance between sloppy and precise: a bookworm doing a keg stand, a revered painter shotgunning a can of Monster, a Beard Award semifinalist chef microwaving a Powerman 5000 CD.
