Thine Retail Simps: Strike Gold, Strike Back, Strike Out [Total Punk]

Strike Gold, Strike Back, Strike Out is one of the best garage punk records of the year and, impossibly given the quality of the last two, the best Simps album. There’s a sloppiness to this music that’s irresistible. Take “O.B. On the Move,” which you could easily describe as a blues rock song. Some of the biggest rock bands in the world have done blues rock albums that relegate the blues to this museum piece. Simps play like they’re almost always about to come off the rails, screaming and shaking wildly. They write these excellent songs and then push them beyond their limits—shaggy, untenable rock’n’roll that’s completely riveting. (Learn more about it in their interview on see/saw.)
