The Bug Club: On the Intricate Inner Workings of the System [Sub Pop]

The Bug Club is the Welsh duo of Tilly Harris and Sam Willmett, and their sound is pop music with scuzzy heft. There’s a song called “Pop Single,” and they stick the landing with a fantastic, catchy, self-aware pop single where they shout out the drama of their own pause-for-effect and key change. It’s rare for a band to be funny in exactly this way while delivering a record that genuinely rips. On “War Movies” they namedrop all the biggest war movies, and when you realize just how many utilize the word “bridge,” you’re giggling through the heft and stomp. Much respect for a relentless and relentlessly goofy band.
