punk this week: slither, vaxine, the last survivors + 5 more
The final installment of 2024 arrives with a stack of sick new records from punk’s international underground
Welcome to Punk This Week, see/saw’s weekly column exploring the latest and greatest punk and rock’n’roll records. It’s the last one of these for the year, focusing on some exceptional underground records including a new hardcore banger from Minneapolis and a split from Vaxine and the Last Survivors.
You wanna know about all the good new records, this week and every week? Punk This Week is available to paid subscribers (and those who barter their way across the paywall). Free subscribers still have access to interviews, podcasts, playlists, and other weekly posts. Please consider a subscription, free or paid, to help grow this reader-supported endeavor.
Also, grab a copy of the year-end zine if you haven’t, I’ve only got a handful left in hand. Thanks, and see ya again in 2025.
SLITHER: SLITHER [self-released]
This is the last column of the year, and it feels appropriate to lead with a Minneapolis band. In a wild year for Minneapolis punk, this debut from SLITHER absolutely overdelivers. A harrowing and howling hardcore record that’s exceptional—its echoing brutalist vocals, all-speed percussive crash, and guitar solos that aim for the rafters but always seem on the cusp of completely falling apart. There’s a good balance of precision and DIY shagginess; intense in a way that still feels within reach. It’s punk house basement show reverie; the good life.
