punk this week: piss, yuasa-exide, cult crime + 15 more
Halloween weekend means merciless hardcore tapes, themed spooky shit, and feedback for miles.
Hey, it’s Punk This Week. see/saw’s weekly punk recommendations column is headlined this time by a truly harrowing listen by PISS. Yuasa-Exide return with a double tape featuring some of their best songs, which is wild. There’s new stuff from Cult Crime, Cammy Cautious and the Wrestlers, Nuits Blanches, Fashion Change, and a bunch more killer stuff.
This punk column gets written every weekend to deliver wild, reckless new music recommendations to the inboxes of paid subscribers every week. That’s $4/month or $40/year or barter (NOTAFLOF, hit me up) for these weekly columns, monthly bonus podcasts, and the full see/saw radio archive.
see/saw is a fully independent labor of love that only continues to exist because readers care enough to subscribe for a little money. Thanks for the support. There’s exciting stuff coming in the next couple months, so subscribe at the free tier to hear all about it. Happy Halloween.
PISS: you made me / skin on linen [Sub Pop]
Vancouver’s PISS made the most important punk record of the year. Abrasive noise, harrowing screams, sparse compositions, and feminist spoken word samples reflect the trauma of sexual violence. Taylor Zantingh’s performance brings it most sharply into focus. Her vocals are closely mic’d, and every quaking breath offers a deep emotional tapestry. “blocking a scene you can't remember” is absolutely gutting.
PISS meditate on processing trauma, and the record opens with the voices of children. This isn’t just an album about one person’s heartbreaking experience—it’s about what’s more broadly broken in a culture that protects rapists. If you’re even sort of paying attention to you made me / skin on linen, its patiently weaved chaos will devastate you.
