It’s Friday, August 16, and this is Punk This Week. It’s see/saw’s rundown of the new punk and rock’n’roll records that are worth a listen. Gel return with a new sound and a new EP. The New Orleans metal and devil worshiping punks Total Hell are back with their latest full-length. Chris Burns & His Going Concerns spread way the hell out. All that and much more.

Gel: Persona EP [Blue Grape]

Do yourself a favor and listen to Persona one time on really big speakers. There’s this instinct as a fan of Only Constant to want them to live in exactly the same sonic space as the last one, but here they sound layered, nuanced, and massive. This is the kind of record they make big speakers for, to hear the ocean of space between the screams and the guitar. Persona is hardcore as furious and ominous as it is fully elemental. This is a massive sounding record that I want to get lost in. This EP features their longest song yet at nearly three minutes, and frankly, it should’ve been “Vanity.” “Vanity” is a fucking classic.
