It’s Friday, August 21, and this is Punk This Week. It’s see/saw’s rundown of the new punk and rock’n’roll records that are worth a listen. This week it’s the stellar sophomore album from Fake Fruit, some great hardcore from Hattiesburg, the latest from wild weirdo budget punks the Gobs, the return of Fastbacks after 25 years, and Buck Biloxi’s got a new band. All that and so much more.

The full post and all installments of Punk This Week are available to paid subscribers (and those who barter their way across the paywall). Fake Fruit: Mucho Mistrust [Carpark]

Oakland’s Fake Fruit started out as a showcase for the songwriting of Hannah “Ham” D’Amato, and “No Mutuals” was its hit single. Now it’s a true collaborative trio, with D’Amato sharing songwriting duties with her bandmates Alex Post and Miles MacDiarmid. Nowhere is that more apparent on Mucho Mistrust than on “Venetian Blinds.” It features Post on vocals for a change, with clacking staccato drumsticks ratcheting the anxiety. Then there’s “Gotta Meet You,” this frenetic bouncy track with sax and cowbells. Their approach this time feels both wildly fun and completely limitless. It’s a step up from where they came from before, which is wild considering they apparently knocked out the recording at top speed.
