Welcome to Punk This Week, see/saw’s weekly column exploring the latest and greatest punk and rock’n’roll records. This time there’s some feral hardcore from Cicada and GAOLED, the latest from London’s Rifle, Reno’s Rotary Club making wonderful punk music about the joys of the landline, and so much more. It’s a great week, which you know is true because there’s finally a new Abe and the Shits demo.

Do you want to read about all of those records? Punk This Week is available to paid subscribers (and those who barter their way across the paywall). Free subscribers still have access to interviews, podcasts, playlists, and other weekly posts. Please consider a subscription, free or paid, to help grow this reader-supported endeavor.

And remember to order your copy of see/saw’s 2024 year end zine!

Cicada: True Self Destruction [Sex Fiend Abomination Tapes and Discs]

Just a couple months back, Richmond hardcore band Cicada released a crucial 7” on Unlawful Assembly called Wicked Dream. This week, they’re back with a new four-song offering called True Self Destruction. It’s three songs streaming; for the CCM cover, you’ve got to buy the physical copy. The playing is expertly frantic, the vocals are guttural. It’s music that sounds like a long descent down the chute to hell, a constant rattling with a demon waiting somewhere at the bottom. That’s what life on planet Earth feels like right now. Therefore, this band receives the highest possible endorsement. (see/saw’s Presidential Medal of Freedom.)
