Billiam: Animation Cel [Erste Theke Tontraeger/Legless]
Animation Cel is a perfect introduction to this now-sprawling project if it’s your first time tapping in. Defined as much by deep anxiety as it is wall-to-wall outstanding hooks, it’s an album that doesn’t let up from the opening handclaps. “Hydraulic Press” and “The Fog” are imbued with darkness and bite while “Animation Cel” and “Matinee Show” are upbeat romps. “Maid Dress” remains an unbelievable hook, and the album ends with a lovely tribute to the artist Shawn Kerri. There’s plenty to be said about Billiam’s prolific nature, but this album bottles how good he is at weaving together a pile of songs that range from solid (apologies to “Segaworld”) to exceptional. It makes for the best Billiam full-length to date.
