playlist: the best punk songs of july 2024
Check out the greatest heavy rock'n'roll music from the past month.
The main thing I deeply missed about the old job was collaboration, so I brought it to see/saw. In July, this publication expanded out to include the voices of some of my favorite writers: Nina Corcoran on Edging, Martin Douglas on Puppet Wipes, Allison Hussey on Magik Markers, and Gem Fair on Peace de Résistance. There’s more to come from writers who aren’t me, and it’s deeply rewarding to get back into a collaborative rhythm.
In addition to these conversations with artists about their own music, see/saw included three interviews focusing on the subjects’ passion for punk music. Wand’s Cory Hanson discussed how This Heat informed so much of what goes into his life as a musician. The artist John F. Malta talked about the aesthetics of a punk 7" collection (and designed this extremely good social media post). Comedian Dan Licata talked about High Vis and told a great Mika Miko story in his “Record Exchange” chat.
Across July, “Punk This Week” featured 46 new blurbs about new punk records. I love writing the column, digging around and finding stuff like Columbus’ Manic Splits alongside coverage of more well-known projects like that final X album. To gain access to all that writing, it’s $4/month or barter. All the money that’s come into see/saw has gone right back into making this website something special. If you pay for a subscription, trust that I will do something fun and cool with your money.
Here’s the monthly list of updates about what’s going on over here:
- At publication time, see/saw is just shy of 1,250 subscribers. This was the biggest month of growth for the site aside from its first. It’s been humbling for sure. Thanks for jumping on if you tapped in this past month. If you have friends who like this kind of music, please share a link + encourage them to subscribe. Word of mouth is the primary way this thing grows.
- If you follow the see/saw Instagram, you might have seen new designs for shirts (by Ryo) and stickers (by Kaldrath General Store). I’ll have more info on availability for those soon. We’ve got other stickers and buttons.
- Speaking of Instagram, you may have noticed that the great ones can’t stop talking about see hyphen saw dot fun. Maybe you, too, would like to tell the world about see hyphen saw dot fun. Shoot me a DM or email.
- I’m going to start putting previously free articles that are older than four months behind the paywall (whenever I remember to actually get around to it). If you’re not loving the paywall, I’d love to gently point you in the direction of the bartering program.
- Tom Scharpling was kind enough to talk to me about see/saw on the most recent episode of The Best Show. It’s been genuinely amazing to hear from so many Friends of Tom after this. I’m still processing the kind things Tom said about me; obviously go support The Best Show.
- Here’s another hearty and sincere thanks to all the artists and labels who donated records to the July vinyl giveaway.
- And here’s a reminder to come hang with us in the Discord!
There are a couple updates I’m pocketing as they’re still in progress, but suffice to say they’re exciting. For now, thanks so much for reading. Here’s a playlist (embedded in the browser, but also available here).
