Miracle Debt were playing a brand new song last night when my glasses flew off my face for probably the fourth time. I finally shoved them in my pocket. It was a warm night in Eau Claire, but it was especially sweaty in The Venue. Neither of the two box fans we found in there were working. It was a stellar four-act bill: half hollerin’ Arkansas singer-songwriters (Adam Faucett and William Blackart) and half Minneapolis punks (Pleasure Cube and Miracle Debt). Drenched in sweat is the correct format for a very loud Debt show. Katie, Forrest, and Mike perform, rendering their outstanding rock’n’roll songs intensely physical. It was a good night—hanging with friends, sweating way too hard, and popping a lens back into my frames while smiling way too hard.

A great rock show can at least momentarily shake me out of my burnout or anxiety or grief. I wrote a similar thing about seeing the Gories in Detroit last month. That show was special not only because I watched legends effortlessly crush on their home turf, but also because of the two ass-kicking young bands on the bill. Falling for a new punk band means having your head rearranged in a brand new way. Pleasure Cube, for example, have this hypnotic dour approach that feels like its own thing within the Minneapolis punk scene. Miracle Debt feel like one of the greatest American rock bands going at the moment—earnest and vitriolic and raw. Seeing those bands live grounded me to the present.

I guess that’s the point of see/saw. Chronicling the latest in new punk and rock’n’roll is my long-haul effort to chase that bizarrely reassuring feeling wherever I can find it. August was a very good month for feeling renewed by excellent records.

A paid subscription to see/saw will run you $4/month or $40/year or barter (NOTAFLOF). It’ll get you weekly punk recommendations columns, bonus podcasts, and the see/saw radio archive. Thanks to everybody who’s kicked over some money over the past two and a half years. It’s a rough time for music writers, so if there’s somebody out there writing about the stuff you like, support them however you can.

Shout out Maximum Rocknroll, Heathen Disco, POW Mag, Trick Bag, Razorcake, Yellow Green Red, Former Clarity, Hearing Things, Barely Human, Don’t Rock the Inbox, Compilation Nation, Dan Ozzi, Last Donut of the Night, Another Thought, Good Experimental Music, MDR Observer, Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie Zine, Hot Sounds, Quinn Moreland, Matthew Strauss, Rate of Decay, the Line of Best Fit, Tone Glow, Aquarium Drunkard, and Stereogum.
