Sex Germs: Whiplash [Crew Cuts]

It’s been a year and change since Leicester’s Sex Germs released Germcore, an exceptional and exceptionally erratic hardcore record. Their new album Whiplash blasts out the gate, showcasing a band impossibly finding a new gear beyond where they’ve been before. The wildfire vocals of the frontperson whose punk name is Skeevy are just completely unhinged—the perfect pairing with the band’s bludgeoning, deeply intense approach.

Some of these songs whip by in a minute or less, and there are moments where they seem to slow down (on “Sellout”) before spilling some death growls and picking all the way back up. There are new wave sensibilities (“Trippin’”) and punchy egg rhythms (“I Like to Eat”) peppered in with abrasive hardcore. A sick new record from an unpredictable and riveting band.
