P.P. Rebel: Devotee [Anti Fade]
The album Devotee by P.P. Rebel feels like it was quietly heralded by the chants that close Parsnip’s deeply underrated 2024 album Behold. Geelong’s Paris Rebel Richens has been on the path of Kriya Yoga, and this harmonium-led project is an extension of that journey through truly devotional music. Devotee is a devotee’s offering and an attempt to shed the material world’s baggage. The 7-minute and 42-second single “Sanctuary” introduced this record with patience and warmth, and the entire record follows in its footsteps. It’s a melding of psychedelic rock’s touchstones (grooves and tambourine) with sounds more common to traditional Eastern spiritual music. This is an expression of love and warmth, devotion and community.
