Eleven days ago—hours past my usual bedtime—I locked eyes with Wesley while he screamed “fuck Kermit” at the B-Side in Memphis, and something inside my chemistry shifted. One of the most exciting live punk bands in the world beckoned me specifically into the pit, and suddenly I was a ragdoll being shoved around a Memphis bar. It was a familiar feeling, even though it’d been nearly a decade since I’d stayed up way too late for Gonerfest aftershows. Some combination of adrenaline and fatigue meant I was gleefully burning the candle at both ends. I’d pay for it later, but in the moment, there wasn’t another option.

Showing up to Gonerfest without much of an agenda meant talking to dozens of my favorite people from around the literal world without a break between cup-filling conversations. I lugged records back with me across the country. A friend sent me a photo of a see/saw sticker that they put on their cassette case, and after I thought to myself “I didn’t hand that person a see/saw sticker,” they revealed they found it on the ground during an acid trip.

It seemed like reality came crashing down right after it was over, and not just because I got super sick. A bunch of international acts had to cancel their appearances, some at the very last second, due to border issues. Days after the festival was over, the feds and Stephen fucking Miller descended on Memphis. But if you carry anything with you after a big punk festival where you rally after a late night because you’ve got to go see Radioactivity and Nape Neck and Eraser and so on, it’s this: Throw yourself into the mix. Don’t arbitrarily preserve your energy. Expend it when it matters.
